WHAT TO EXPECT SCUBA DIVING IN MOZAMBIQUE?

As Back to Basics Adventures is a small boutique dive center the owners, Jenny and Rupert, have the time to introduce you to them and to their marine life. The reefs of Ponta do Ouro lays within the Maputo Special Reserve and consist of subtropical reefs. The marine diversity is impressive with anything from Humpback whales to dolphin and sharks combined with great number of coral reef fish. The dive site varies from 10-40m in depth and 1km to 12km in distance from launch site. With the owners extensive knowledge they can tailor make trips to according to divers interests and skill level. Each dive starts at the dive center with a thorough briefing on marine life and their behavior.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO DIVE MOZAMBIQUE?

  • Reef diving - All year Around

  • Shark Diving - November to April. This is the summer months in Southern Africa.

  • Humpback Whale Migration - July to November.

The Water Temperature during the summer months (November-April) is between 24-26°C and during the winter months (May-October) 21-23°C. Visibility changes very quickly and don’t have a specific season. Average visibility is around 15m and good visibility is around 30m, Southern Mozambique rarely have less then 10m visibility.

The owners of Back to Basics Adventures favors the month of May and October as it is the months where the seasonal changes takes place. The best shark diving is the month of December or March. the months of January and February can be tricky as it correlates with Cyclone Season. January and February often have large swell and its very warm and humid.

THE OUTFIT

Back to Basics Adventures uses a 8m rubber duck that is fully equipped to take up to 14 divers. They do beach launches where all divers help to push in the boat. All the dives are drift dives being in the open ocean. Safety is our priority and there is radio and telephone communication to shore. Emergency oxygen is standard equipment and all the staff is trained in emergency first response.

One of their specialties is Shark Dives at the reef Pennicles, In season (November-April) you will have the opportunity for close encounters with some of the 19 different shark species. From July-November it´s not uncommon to sight humpback whales and whale sharks on the way to the dive site. After diving all equipment are washed properly by the staff and stored in a secure place.

If you need scuba gear you can either rent item per item or buy one of our their dive packages that includes full gear. All divers must present their qualification cards upon arrival.
