WHO ARE WE?
Back to Basics Adventures is made up of a husband and wife team, working together to show thier clients the biodiversity of Southern Mozambique. Rupert is the Shark Expert and founder of Back to Basics Adventures, he gave up the buzz of the city and moved to the slow and rural life of Ponta do Ouro, where Back to Basics were born in 2010. This is when they met, with an background in Political Science, Jenny had an appetite to find out more about the unknown marine life she encountered while diving in Ponta do Ouro. With Ruperts help and contacts she built up a network of scientists and started to record the marine life within the Maputo Special Reserve while leading dives. Together they are what makes Back to Basics Dive Center so special.
Now many years later, the duo have contributed to science, published their own book and discovered a few new species of Seaslugs. This is all possible thanks to the clients who are supporting Back to Basics Adventures and exploring the Subtropical Reefs of Southern Mozambique together with them.
THE PHILOSOPHY
Literally back to basics, life in Mozambique forces one to focus on that which is really important, leaving the glam and glitter of the city life far behind, finding the essence of life and sharing it with others.
Back to Basics Adventures found that the essence of their operation is the people. The people that own it, the people that work there, and most importantly the people that visit, because Back to Basics Adventures realises that it is the people that make the dive a memorable experience, not the amount of dives you can fit into a day. Back to Basics Adventures are passionate about people. It is a community, not a business, where each customer is known on their name and listened to.
MEET THE TEAM
Supported by Jenny, Instructor Somane, Domingo, Angela and Pascal, three of the local talents discovered by Rupert,
Rupert is the owner, a qualified RAID/PADI instructor and one of the best skippers available. He skippers the boat and manages the shark dives.
Jenny is a Dive Guide with a passion for nudibranches interweaved with a natural talent for underwater photography. Look at the research page for more details on her work and what she is giving back to the community with her work.
Somane is the RAID in-house-instructor at Back to Basics. He is an excellent teacher and takes the time with each student to develop to their best abilities.
Domingo does not seem to know how to have a bad day, he is the deckhand and will assist clients on the boat.
Angela handles the reception, all the clients equipment and makes everything runs smoothly. She is a key employee.
Pascoal is an experienced skipper and he is the topman while diver are down. He is meticulous with everything he does.

Ponta do Ouro is 12km from the Kosi Bay border in South Africa, or 120km from Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. It is the first big town north of the border to South Africa where you can find shops, restaurants and a range of accommodation.
